Haiku Project Blossoms Into Nature Walk
Follow along the journey our 5th grade students took as they learned to write poetry and created an immersive experience for our community.
Students first learned about haiku poetry in class.
Next, they drew inspiration from their field trip to Washington, D.C., where they visited Claude Monet, The Immersive Experience.
Item 1 of 6
Returning from their field trip, students began to write and paint their nature-inspired haikus.
Poems were then posted throughout the woods on the 11 acre campus, creating a haiku hike for the entire Siena community to enjoy.
During their hike, students wrote compliments about each haiku to share with the class.
Item 1 of 4
The poems were on display during Siena's annual Grandparents' and Special Guests' Day.
Students read their haiku poems to their visitors,
and each visitor was given a copy of the haiku to take home as a keepsake from the day.
“A multi-step project like this makes learning robust and connects our elementary students’ writing to something they’re interested in.”
